Latest Blog: Tips to Finding the Right Career for You

Do you have difficulty deciding on a career?  Here are some first steps.

  1. Read career books. There are many books at your local library on careers.  Many books break down careers into categories and list educational experience and give insight on career growth future outlook.  Also libraries contain books on resume writing, interviewing tips, and how to market.
  2. Take career assessments. Many local colleges and universities offer free career assessments to their students.
  3. Interview people who work in career fields that interest you. Questioning people already working in a field of interest is a great way to find out if this new career opportunity is one that you should pursue.  You can find out information about job tasks, actual hours, and commitment requirements needed to pursue that career.
  4. Shadow a person in the career that interests you. Shadowing involves following a person for a few days and observing his or her day to day tasks at work.  I shadowed a School Psychologist when I was getting my bachelor degree.  I learned a lot about the field and it was a great life experience.
  5. Explore your past.  To determine if you have difficulty making decisions or self-destructive behavior that prevents you from growth or change, you may need to talk to a counselor.  A counselor may help you to explore and understand yourself better by examining family relationships, educational experiences, and life issues that have prevented you from finding a great career.  For example, many times people are not aware of how past individuals or family members have subtly influenced their career decisions.

Deciding on a career can be hard, but by trying these few steps can lead to a career that you love.
